Lake Orion High School choir director Deb Fristad was recently named LOHS Teacher of the Year in a surprise ceremony at the school on Jan. 13. Fristad has been at LOHS since 1997, directing the introductory choir, women’s concert choir, and choral mixed choir, as well as honor choir and two show choirs. In addition to her time teaching at the high school, Fristad has also taught around the Lake Orion district at Blanche Sims Elementary and Scripps Middle School. All three of Fristad’s choirs at LOHS earned Division I ratings at the district level last year, and sent one student to the national honor choir, as well as several students to statewide honor choirs. Fristad received a plaque, and her award was celebrated with punch and cake with her fellow teachers. After viewing a special video that was put together, including appearances from her parents and children, Fristad said ‘I’m floored…very humbled. (My students) inspire me to keep going. ?
