DECA helps terminally ill kids

Some kind-hearted members of Oxford High School’s DECA Club are offering their ‘helping hands? to children who will never grow up.
Seniors Ally Zonsius, Vanessa Collier and Rachel Kenny are raising funds to buy crayons, coloring books, reading books and toys for terminally ill children staying at Children’s Hospital in Detroit and the Ronald McDonald House.
Dubbed ‘Helping Hands,? the Public Relations project for DECA, the school’s student marketing club, consists of a variety of fun and creative fund-raisers.
The most visible is the sale of colorful paper hands for $1 each during the school’s lunch periods. Purchasers write their names on the hands, which are then placed on the walls of the high school’s new student store.
‘The goal is to fill all the walls,? Zonsius said. So far, about 120 hands have been sold.
The trio recently raised $250 conducting a ‘penny war? (basically a change collection) between five OHS teachers, the loser of which, Paul McDevitt, had his hair dyed blue on Monday.
Over the next few months, Zonsius, Collier and Kenny will be conducting fund-raisers at Oxford Middle School consisting of after-school activities, games and refreshments for each grade level. The sixth grade event will take place Oct. 22, seventh grade Nov. 30 and eighth grade Dec. 2.
Zonsius, Collier and Kenny will take their campaign to help terminally ill children beyond the schools when they enter a float promoting the Helping Hands project in the Oxford Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Christmas parade Dec. 4.
As they walk the parade route, Zonsius said DECA members will be passing out information about Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House while collecting donations
