Old-fashioned dinner theater returned to Oxford May 2 with a Christian twist as the youth of Christ the King Church presented an evening of food, fun, faith and fund-raising.
About 350 people attended the Youth Dinner Theater raising approximately $2,500 to help send some of the church’s young people to Hiawatha Youth Camp this summer.
A nondenominational Christian camp located on the shores of Piatt Lake in the Hiawatha National Forest in the Upper Peninsula, Hiawatha mixes spreading the gospel with all sorts of fun activities.
‘It’s just a life-changing experience,? said church member Adam Silorey, a sophomore at Oxford High School, who’s spent three summers at Hiawatha as a camper and one as a staff member.
Silorey plans to work there again this summer and keep going back ’till they kick me out.?
‘Getting closer to God up there is just amazing and I want everyone else to be able to go,? he said.
To help make that happen, Silorey organized this fund-raising event complete with a spaghetti dinner and 14 skits performed by members of the church’s youth group.
‘It was amazing,? he said. ‘We only expected about 150. We ran out of spaghetti.?
After dinner, the audience was treated to an hour and 10 minutes worth of skits that ranged from laugh-out-loud silliness to poignant Christian messages about the destructive pitfalls faced by today’s youth.
Silorey said most of the skits came from Hiawatha, while a few were from YouTube. He served as director while Amber and Ashley Blair worked as the choreographers.
Pastor Bob Holt enjoyed the skits so much he asked Silorey and his talented troupe to perform them all again during Christ the King’s Sunday, May 25 service.
