A fallen power line in downtown Oxford’s northwest parking lot caused 200 customers to lose electricity Tuesday afternoon.
According to Oxford Fire Capt. Ron Jahlas, ‘it’s not 100 percent clear,? but it appears a delivery truck was going through the parking lot when the top of the vehicle snagged some low-hanging cable lines.
‘Our assumption is then it put tension on the (utility) poles, pulled (the primary line) past the capacity and it snapped,? he said.
When firefighters arrived, the line had fallen on top of a snow pile and was arcing.
When the high voltage electricity made contact with the snow, it melted some of it causing lots of steam, which firefighters at first mistook for smoke because the live wire had landed near a pickup truck.
Fortunately, the wire did not come into contact with the truck or any other property or persons. ? Editor C.J. Carnacchio
