The Lake Orion competitive cheer team is peaking at the right time and poised to challenge for a state title this week as they travel to Grand Rapids to the Delta Plex on Friday night at 6 p.m.
The lady Dragons have beaten most of the teams in the field of eight teams in the Division 1 finale.
Two of the teams, Rochester, and Stoney Creek, also compete with Lake Orion in the OAA Red Division. The Dragons have beaten and lost to both schools during meets this season.
The OAA Red is, without question, the strongest division in the state. The Dragons finished second to Stoney Creek in the final league standings.
Other teams in the state finals are Grand Blanc, Grandville, Hartland, Livonia Stevenson, and Sterling Heights Stevenson.
Last weekend at the regionals at Novi, the Dragons beat Grandville, who had been ranked third, ahead of sixth-place Lake Orion in state polls. Last year, the Dragons place fourth in the state.
There are three rounds in competitive cheer and Lake Orion won every round to top Grandville, 782.6 to 780.76.
First-year Coach Nicole Hills said she was proud of the girls and is sure they will be ready this week.
‘They are really excited and motivated.?
