In response to a letter written by James Delavan, I would strongly disagree that this country was structured to not be run by attorneys.
As a college student at Michigan State, I keep up with what is going on in Lake Orion.
At the time our Constitution was passed and after the Federalist Papers were written, Alexis de Tocqueville wrote arguably the best book regarding democracy (by liberals and conservatives alike), titled Democracy in America.
He states that the reason that democracy works so well in America is because of the amount of well educated citizens, particularly lawyers, running our government.
We have what is called a democratic republic. It’s set up so that the public doesn’t directly elect every branch of the government. Success would be difficult if the people directly voted for president, all of Congress and the Supreme Court.
There wouldn’t be the sort of “clash” needed to have a successful government.
Basically, Delavan, people work very hard to become elected officials of our great government. It’s preposterous to think an educated group of citizens such as lawyers would be forbidden. That is not democracy.
I may suggest you run for office if you seem to believe our government is so corrupt — that’s democracy.
