Elite Gymnastics settles in to new home, offers more programs

Elite Gymnastics Inc. has produced so many star athletes it’s no surprise that they needed to find a bigger gym for their students.
With its new location at 715 Lapeer Rd. across from the Meijers in Oxford, Elite’s 20,000 square foot facility is filled to the brim with safe, age appropriate and USAG certified equipment, such as balance beams, uneven parallel bars, trampolines, and tumble mats for athletes ages 18 months to adult.
Founder and Head Coach of Elite Jeni Ochoa said the October move was necessary in order to provide more programs for their growing athletes.
On top of the new building, Ochoa said a 45 foot tumble track was placed into the ground as well as a large in-ground pit to help break falls from vaulters and such.
‘We’re trying to raise money from our summer camps to put in an 85-100 foot rod floor for power tumbling,? she said.
Also new to the gym is a 1,000 square foot dance room that doubles as an aerobics, yoga and adult couples dance room.
‘We also have an adult gymnastic class now which is a blast,? she said. ‘We can grow and I’m sure as time goes on, we’ll figure out more to do with the space.?
Currently Elite has athletes on competitive gymnastic teams, cheer teams, a recreational team, dance instructional, and hundreds of students, both male and female, in various instructional and preschool classes.
Ochoa said the men’s competitive program is now back in action, which took third place at their first meet in February.
‘I think the Paul and Morgan Hamm in the Olympics in 2004 really helped the boys and the parents realize that gymnastics is really cool,? she said.
Not only is gymnastics cool, but according to Ochoa, creates excellent self-esteem.
‘It teaches kids to set goals and reach them,? she said. ‘We teach them to set them in small increments.?
Elite athletes are coached by a staff of 17 fully qualified with USAG certification and many years of personal gymnastic competition experience.
Before opening the gym Ochoa was teaching basic tumbling to small children and cheerleaders, eventually local schools sent children to her and she decided to open a facility to accommodate the growing crowd.
Her coaching staff grew along with her students and now totals 23.
In addition, coaches Tricia Ochoa, Mike Bassman, Traci Shamaly, Jen Broombaugh-Ojala, Nathan Shaffer, Carla Coons, James Fleener, Barb Goff, Pierra Harlin, Jinelle Hudson, Lori Kayfish, Mellisa McClain, Jodi Dowd, Cheryl Adragna, Jamie Piscitelli, Kelli Schenkel, Danielle Stinson, Theresa Terrian and Matt Vasquez coach the wide variety of fun programs at Elite Gymnastics.
These extremely qualified coaches have lead Elite’s athletes towards exciting accomplishments.
Last season, Ochoa said Elite’s Level Six competitive gymnastics team placed third in the state, while Level Five’s placed fourth. The cheerleading team took National Champion as a stunt group and placed first, second and third in Tumble Pass.
‘We’ve had a lot of individual state and national champions,? she said.
To help break in the new gym, Elite hosted two invitationals to which their athletes ‘won at every level.?
The winter months aren’t the only time for athletic activity. Elite Gymnastics offers an awesome themed ‘Extreme Power? summer camp.
The first Cheer Camp runs from June 25-27, 5-Day Gymnastics Camp runs June 19-23 and July 27-31, Mini-Gymnastics Camp runs July 20-22 and August 7-9, and the Stunt and Tumble Camp runs from August 3-4.
You may even catch a glimpse of former U.S.A. Olympians, like Kerri Strug, Dominique Moceanu and Shannon Miller.
Parents can even give their kids a special private birthday party on weekends.
Elite Gymnastics offers party packages from one to two hours of fun gym time with a trained USAG certified instructor, inflatable play park and much more.
