Elsworth, Martians cruise past Hamady; Montrose on deck

The yards ? and touchdowns ? just keep on coming for Goodrich senior running back Kirk Elsworth.
Elsworth rushed for 264 yards on 19 carries, scoring three rushing touchdowns and catching a touchdown pass as the Martians earned a 48-0 victory against host Hamady in a Sept. 10 contest.
With the win, the Martians? record stands at 2-1 following Goodrich’s forfeit of its Aug. 27 opener against Richmond (see accompanying story).
Elsworth scored on runs of 45, 1, and 8 yards, and caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Keith Brotherton.
Goodrich senior Adam Compeau caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Brotherton and on a 34-yard touchdown run, and also caught a two-point conversion pass from Brotherton. Senior Jeff Decator scored the Martians? other touchdown of the game on a one-yard run.
The Martians took on Byron in their Homecoming contest Sept. 17, and now get ready for a pivotal Genesee Area Conference Red Division matchup at Montrose Sept. 24.
The Rams, along with the Martians, finished in a three-way tie for the GAC Red title last season, splitting the title with Mt. Morris. Montrose lost in the first round of the 2003 playoffs against Saginaw Nouvel, finishing with a record of 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the league.
Montrose returns a couple All-GAC Red players this season in quarterback Tim Burnison and defensive back Antraz Burton. The Rams are ranked second in the state in Division 5, and improved to 3-0 on the season by routing Bendle 55-0 on Sept. 10.
