The Oakland County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call of suspicious circumstances on Dec. 30, after a 24-year-old Joslyn Road woman thought she had been the victim of a scam.
According to an OCSD report, the woman was a member of an Internet chat room, and that another female member of the chat room began emailing her on a daily basis. The woman told her that her health was failing and that she wanted her to manage her estate.
The Joslyn woman said she agreed, and an attorney emailed her documents. She also received a cashier’s check for $9,800 in the mail, with instructions for her to deposit it in her personal account. While she was waiting for the check to clear, an investor emailed her instructing her to send the check to the Netherlands.
The woman said she told the man she couldn’t send the money until the check cleared, and was then informed by her bank that the check was counterfeit.
