Employee charged in gas station embezzling case

The former manager of an Ortonville gas station has been charged with embezzling more than $100,000 from the business.
Carin Day was arraigned Sept. 25 in front of 52-2 District Court Judge Joseph Fabrizio on three charges of embezzlement? the first for embezzlement over $100,000; the second for embezzlement over $50,000 but less than $100,000; and a third count of embezzlement over $1,000, but less than $20,000.
The case has been a long time coming. According to Oakland County Sheriff’s Office reports, on Jan. 28, 2013, a Brandon deputy responded to the Citgo gas station, 495 S. Ortonville Road, for embezzlement. The district manager who oversees the business said at the time he discovered Day, the Citgo manager, had embezzled between $5,800 to $7,000 from the business. Bank deposits are to be done daily and shift worksheets showing cash amounts are to be faxed to the district manager daily. He said he had not received worksheets, nor had bank deposits been done for the previous five days.
He said Day told him she lost the shift worksheets. Other employees told the district manager Day had been pressuring them to give their own cash for shortages. The district manager suspected Day had a gambling problem and fired her.
Day was released from Oakland County Jail on a $50,000 personal bond following her arraignment.
