Yet another reminder of why everyone needs to be careful when posting messages on Facebook.
On Friday, Feb. 4, Superintendent of Oxford Community Schools Dr. William Skilling wrote a letter to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office in Pontiac alerting them to a potential threat to Oxford High School students and community posted on Facebook.
According to the report, Skilling received information about a Facebook page disagreeing with him over the district’s decision to privatize custodial services and bring over Chinese students to be educated.
He found a wall post by a Facebook member on a recent discussion board about the district’s plan to celebrate the Chinese New Year that alarmed him.
The group was discussing the upcoming Chinese New Year performances celebrating the year of the rabbit at Oxford High School and Daniel Axford Elementary when the question was asked how to best celebrate the occasion.
After some members joked about killing rabbits and bringing them to the performances, this individual posted, ‘We are going to hunt chinese instead! Plane fare anyone??
This perceived threat prompted Skilling to write a letter to the sheriff’s department.
‘I find it very disturbing that people are talking, even in jest, about hunting others, and there are a number of adolescents who visit this page regularly,? Skilling wrote.
Sgt. Scott Patterson said the investigation into the incident is still open.
