Fireworks funding falls short: Another breakfast planned

Last year, the Lake Orion Fireworks Association raised $26,000 to pay for the annual fireworks during the July 4th holiday.
With a little over a week to go, just about 70 percent of the cost of this year’s display has been reached. It’s been estimated it will cost in excess of $25,000.
Over 500 people attended a breakfast fundraiser at the Lake Orion Boat Club several weeks ago. It was such a success that committee members have decided to host another one on June 26 from 9 a.m. until the food runs out.
The cost is $10/adult, $5/children 12 and under.
Shuttle service is available to the island by calling Bruce Fritz at 248-891-7189 or Tom Carroll at 248-736-6043. Pick up takes place at Snug Harbor Marina on Heights Road. Additional parking at the marina is in the grass area.
The LO Fireworks Association is a non-profit corporation. It’s made up of a small committee of volunteers whom each year have various fundraisers such as car washes to help raise the necessary funds. Local businesses and citizens are also solicited for donations.
The fireworks display is an old tradition on Lake Orion that dates back to the 1950s. Currently it coincides with the Lake Orion Lions Club Jubilee which is a carnival that takes place in downtown Lake Orion during the 4th of July holiday week.
Monies raised for the fireworks are given to the Wolverine Fireworks Association, a professional fireworks display company, who puts on the display and provides the necessary insurance required by the village.
This year’s fireworks event takes place on July 2, 10 p.m. The lighted show is sent up from Green’s Park on M-24. Lake Orion Police have estimated the audience to be more than 100,000.
