First place photo for Cnews

Wendi Reardon snagged first place honors for Feature Photograph in the 2014 Michigan Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.
Her entry ‘Let me think about this? from the Aug. 7, 2013, Clarkston News, was tops out of 29 entries. The photo shows Sarah Kurzman pondering throwing a pie in one of her camp counselor’s faces.
‘Priceless expression and candid moment,? said the judge. ‘Good use of depth of field and color. I’m eager to see the counselor’s reaction, perhaps moving slightly to the right would have given a better profile.?
‘I am honored,? Reardon said. ‘One of the things I enjoy about my job is capturing candid moments during the community events. Sometimes I have a hard time putting the camera down. It was hard to choose which photos to enter over a span of a year, but this one was one of my favorites. I am happy it was appreciated by the judges.?
Sherman Publications’ newspapers received a total of 13 awards in this year’s contest.
According to the Michigan Press Association, it was the second year in a row more members have submitted more entries in the Michigan Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest.
Members of Wisconsin Newspaper Association reviewed 3,417 entries submitted by 119 Michigan newspapers this year.
‘As newspapers evolve and grow in these ‘platform agnostic’ times, they remain the foundation of vibrant communities across the Great Lake State,? said MPA Executive Director Mike MacLaren. ‘We’ve seen double-digit increases in this contest and the tougher competition helps our members capture audience attention and build better communities.?
