Freshman hockey player chosen for special camp

Oxford High School freshman Courtney May, 15, was one of only ten girls from Michigan chosen by the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association to attend the USA Hockey Development Camp in Rochester, NY this summer.
‘I am so glad I made it because it boosts my confidence,? she said.
The camp is sponsored by USA Hockey each year to bring the top players from around the country together and work with the players to develop their skills.
Courtney will attend the camp with girls from all over the United States, including hockey hot spots like Alaska, California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York and Colorado.
Courtney has been playing hockey since she was 4- years-old and playedwith boys for the first few years. At 10, she began playing on all girl travel teams and has played at a high level ever since.
‘I became interested in playing hockey because my brother and dad played and I always went to watch them, so that inspired me,? she said.
Currently she plays defense for the U16 Victory Honda team of the Midwest Elite Hockey League. Last year as a defenseman, Courtney had eight goals, 14 assists, and 34 penalty minutes. Her team finished second overall in the state.
She will also attend hockey camp this summer at Brown University, in Rhode Island.
So, are there any plans for May to start a girls hockey team at OHS? Not likely. ‘There is just not enough girls that play hockey in this area,? she said, adding that if someone were to form a North Oakland team that it would be more feasible.
