15 YEARS AGO (1988)
nUsing $1.8 million as the target, Clarkston school district administrators recommended massive cutbacks for the 1988-89 school year to the board of education Monday night. The proposal came in the wake of rejections of tax increase requests by voters in June and October. The board of education has opted to plan for reductions rather than immediately go back to voters a third time.
nAlthough the ice is thick enough for skating again, the “Keep Off” signs have not been removed from the Mill Pond in Clarkston. The signs were put in place last week, when the ice sagged and broke, making it unsafe, according to Ed Adler, who owns the Mill Pond cofferdam and the Clarkston Mills Mall.
nBenefiting property owners won’t bear the entire burden of costs when the first phase of the M-15 drain in Independence Township is built this year. The township board voted Jan. 19 to adopt a resolution calling for the construction of the drain in three phases with an “at large” type of assessment.
25 YEARS AGO (1978)
nHawke’s Cove developer Marc Alan cleared the last hurdle and won unanimous approval of his site plan at Monday’s village council meeting. The final obstacle had been a determination of a traffic plan for Depot Road and a commitment on Alan’s part to share the cost of improvements.
nThe Clarkston Village Council voted unanimously in favor of an animal control ordinance that would conform with existing township regulations at the recommendation of Chief Jack McCall. McCall said it would be much easier for his officers to enforce animal control regulations at the recommendation of Chief Jack McCall.
nWhen homeowners moved into Hillview Estates I, they weren’t told only one road would service all 110 planned homes in the rectangular-shaped community. Protesting what they feel are inadequate and unsafe road conditions for a subdivision of that size were 27 homeowners who took their case to the Independence Township Board last week.
50 YEARS AGO (1953)
nTonight the curtain will rise on the senior play “Melody Jones” at 8 p.m. in the Clarkston High School auditorium. In the cast will be Rose Sarvis, Judy O’Dell, Bill Sutton, Terry Brown, Martha Masters, Carolyn Honchell, Danny Curry, “Chuck” Robertson, Jim Gardiner, Tom Bullen, Glenna Webster, Lottie Sawyer and Sue Shanks.
nThe Clarkston Community Schools will take part in a statewide Children’s Clothing Crusade to collect serviceable used clothing during the week of Feb. 16-21, School Superintendent L.F. Greene announced today. The collection is part of the eleventh National Children’s Clothing Crusade under the auspices of a national committee of school superintendents.
nDue to the resignation of Ernest Squier as a director of the Clarkston State Bank, a vacancy was created on the board and Roy A. Alger was elected to fill it Tuesday afternoon. Twenty-one stockholders attended the meeting, which was the best attended in a number of years.
