15 YEARS AGO (1988)
· From a field of 59 applicants for the position of superintendent of Clarkston schools, 11 have been selected for interviews. The Board of Education met Monday night with the consortium of administrative directors from Michigan’s state universities to discuss procedures for interviewing the candidates.
· In celebration of his 10th year in Clarkston, Dr. Harvey Rose is offering his services without charge on Tuesday, March 29. A podiatrist, Rose will provide foot and ankle care services and diagnostic services free. No appointments will be taken, and the free service will only be for the day. Rose says he’s providing the patient appreciation day “just to say thank you to Clarkston.”
· A resolution was unanimously adopted by the Independence Township Board in opposition to a statement by Gov. James Blanchard in his 1988 State of the State message in January. In Blanchard’s “The Michigan Strategy,” he proposed legislation to stop local governments from using zone ordinances to prohibit juvenile work camps and other facilities in their communities.
25 YEARS AGO (1978)
· Three Clarkston Village Council positions, the chairman and secretary/treasurer of the Planning Commission will receive wage increases in the fiscal year of 1978-79. Trustee Neil Sage presented the Council’s recommendations for the five person wage increase. He said the raises would cover the added responsibility of village officials to the rapidly growing community.
· Independence Township residents say they are concerned about taxes, development and the quality of life in the Clarkston area, according to a recently completed survey. A majority of respondents also call for a broadened tax base and say they want limits on governmental growth.
· Despite an impending shortage of fuel due to the unsolved coal strike, management from area businesses, schools and local government say they are doing all they can to conserve energy. Most public buildings were cooled down to 65 degrees last winter, when the severe weather conditions put a heavy strain on fuel supplies. This winter, schools, local government buildings and businesses say they have kept their thermostats down to 65 degrees during the day and 60 degrees at night.
50 YEARS AGO (1953)
· While the Erwin Ross family was having breakfast, about 7:45 a.m., Monday morning they heard their car being backed out of the driveway. Ed ran out of the house and managed to get into the car and drag the driver out of the car onto the ground. At this point, Kenneth Craft ,working in The News Shop, looked up and saw what was going on. He jumped out of the window and went to the assistance of Ross. Mrs. Ross cut two pieces off of her clothesline and with these the driver was securely bound hand and foot. Mrs. Ross’ sister, Miss Eva Sortzi called the sheriff.
· The Clarkston Wolves ended their tournament playing as they lost to Saginaw Saint Mary 58-48. Tom Bullen led Clarkston with 15 points while Rob Schebor added 13 points.
·At the meeting of the Clarkston P.T.A. Mrs. Roland Allen was elected president for the 1953-54 school year.
