Brandon Twp. — As of July 1, the Brandon School District has a new superintendent.
Dr. Dan Gilbertson stepped in as superintendent from interim superintendent Dr. Gary Richards, whose last day was June 30.
Gilbertson, who stopped by The Citizen newspaper on Wednesday, previously was superintendent of Crosswell-Lexington school district.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to come to Brandon and build on the success that’s been established here,” he said. “I’m excited to expand on the great education programs that are in place, the STEM and career programs. And I’m also excited about providing a greater opportunity for students to learn career readiness, opening doors for students.”
Gilbertson is originally from the Romeo/Armada area, and he and his wife have four children and three grandchildren. He says he is looking forward to working with the community and the staff.
“I want to ensure that we’re boosting academic achievement growth, and ensuring that students are highly proficient in math and reading and core academic areas, including literacy,” he said. “I’m excited to get to know all the teachers, the administrators, the families, and really just be immersed in the community. I want to learn, to listen, to find out what we’re doing well and also, from that information, collaborating and soliciting input to improve upon what we’re doing.”
