Girl Scout Troop 70108 from Clear Lake Elementary has not only been studying the IB Learner Profile at their school but incorporated these attributes of helping others around the world.
While participating the annual Girl Scout International Night, the troop took the ‘Girls Empowering Girls? theme a little further. They had a bake sale after school at Clear Lake Elementary and raised $62.
They raised enough money to ’empower? two young women in other countries to realize their dreams by giving them the means to support themselves and start businesses.
With the help of a few Moms, they were able to search on line and give two $25 loans through Kiva, a company based out of San Francisco, California (www.kiva.com).
They chose a young woman named Analyn from the Philippines, who wants to use the loan to help her farming business. Another loan went to a young woman named Pho from Cambodia, who is also buying fertilizers to grow crops.
Once the loans are paid back to the Kiva organization, the Girl Scout troop will have the option to re-donate the money to other young women overseas or receive the $50 cash donation and help locally.
The main goal of this project was to empower our troop to actually see the results of their hard work to help others. That is empowering girls to change the world!
