The title of the Beatles? song ‘Come Together? is appropriate to describe what the Brandon girls basketball team accomplished at a recent camp.
About 25 members from the varsity and junior varsity teams traveled to Northwood University for a team basketball camp July 18-20. Brandon competed with eight other teams in the camp.
The varsity and junior varsity teams both went 7-2 in game action at the camp.
‘It was a great learning process for us because we’re a real young team,? Brandon assistant coach Tom Schaefer said. ‘It taught us how to become a team and get the camaraderie going. We have a long way to go to be competitive like we were last year.?
Head coach Bryan Ray’s team lost four seniors from last year’s team, which went 19-3 overall and 12-0 in the Flint Metro League ? Brittany Stedman (who will be playing at Northwood University this fall), Patrice Andre (who will be playing at Oakland Community College), Jenny McCarty and Joia King.
Brandon will be returning two seniors in the upcoming season ? Lahunna Waybrant (expected to be the starting point guard) and Jessica Stone.
Schaefer said the team has impressed him with their offseason commitment.
‘They’ve been really working hard during the summer,? he said. ‘We needed to put in a lot of extra time. I’ve never seen a group of kids work as hard as they do.?
The team will begin tryouts Monday, Aug. 11.
