Flint— On March 4 the Goodrich Girls Varsity Basketball team slipped past the Lake Fenton Blue Devils in a thrilling district championship game 54-53 at Flint Powers High School. It was the Martians first victory against the previously undefeated Blue Devils (23-1) this season following three defeats.
“We made some shots that we didn’t make in the other games,” said Jason Gray, Martian head coach. “That was really big. Riley (Place) was our leading scorer and they held her down pretty consistently until today. She was able to get herself in some open spots and we were able to get her the ball where she can make it.”
Riley Place led all scorers with 16 points while Kalen Williams and Ella Place had 10 and nine points each.
Gray said maybe at the end of the third quarter he was thinking that nobody deserves to lose this game.
“I would have felt heartbroken for our kids,” he said. “I’m sure Lake Fenton is heartbroken.”
“It’s been fun,” said Gray. “I wouldn’t draw it up this way, but to play them three straight weeks it gives us some familiarity with each other obviously helped us and I’m sure helped them too. I’ve never felt like this before and that’s what this rivalry will do – it makes some incredible feelings.”
