Goodrich, Brandon numbers edge higher

Based on the Sept. 22 student count, both Brandon and Goodrich high schools have shown a marginal increase of approximately 1 percent.
This week’s count reflected a total of 2,086 students in the Goodrich School District, and 3,634 in the Brandon School District.
State funding for the districts is awarded on a per-pupil allowance, based on the number of students counted in the district in Setember and February.
Both districts are showing less students at the elementary level. Kindergarten through sixth-grade classes at Brandon are reduced by 55 students since the September 2003 count, although the BEES program showed an increase of 4.2 pupils.
Goodrich kindergarten through fifth-grade classes were reduced by eight students. The elimination of the Young 5’s program, which was implemented in 2003-2004, accounted for the loss of 18 additional students since last year’s fall count.
Student numbers were up at the middle and high school levels. Brandon school administrators counted 22 more students at the middle school level, 65 more students at the high school level, and an additional 5 students in the Choices program.
At Goodrich Middle School, the count was up by 20 students this year, and 25 at the high school level.
