Goodrich track teams prove to be best in GAC Red

Goodrich’s track program continues to set the standard for others in the Genesee Area Conference Red Division to follow.
At the May 27 league meet in Mt. Morris, the Martian boys team won their 13th overall league championship in 14 seasons, scoring 157 points to easily outdistance runner-up Mt. Morris (100) and third-place Montrose (79).
Meanwhile, the Martian girls team captured their third straight league crown, totaling an even 200 points and blowing away their nearest competition, second-place LakeVille (86) and third-place Byron (73).
The boys team captured first place in five events on their way to winning the league meet. The Martians particularly excelled in the field events, winning three: discus (Barrett Johnson, 134?), long jump (Jeff Decator, 19?11-1/2?), and pole vault (Lance Keene, 12?6?).
The Martians? other first-place finishes came in the 300 meter hurdles (Charlie Richards, 42.88) and the 800 meter run (Ben Richards, 2:07.52). In all, the Martians placed 26 times in the 17 events.
Meanwhile, the girls team left no room for second-guessing who is the best team in the GAC Red, taking first in nine events.
Jacqui Cornwell picked up two of those first-place finishes, winning the shot put (32?8-1/4) and the discus (111?3?).
The Martians also excelled in relay competition, winning three different relays: 3,200 meters (Sam Minkler, Kaitlin O’Mara, Kayla O’Mara, and Janee Jones, 9:54.51), 800 meters (Michelle Elliott, Casey Tubbs, Paige Plant, and Amber Beard, 1:54.18), and 1,600 meters (Elliott, Kelsey Meyers, Minkler, Jones, 4:20.92).
Kayla and Kaitlin O’Mara finished one-two in the 1,600 meters and the 3,200 meters, while Jones finished first in the 400 meters (1:01.87) and Minkler won the 800 meters (2:28.33).
