It seems nothing can stop the Oxford wrestling team in its quest to be state champs.
‘Every time we go out on the mat, we’re working toward that goal,? said Coach Scott Couch.
The grapplers got one step closer by winning the 19th Annual Oxford Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 30 at the high school.
Competing against eight other schools, the Wildcats took first place with a combined total of 228 points.
Imlay City finished second.
Taking first place in their respective weight classes were freshman Zac Miller (103), senior Mike Upshur (119), senior Bobby Rhodes (135), senior Brent Mueller (160), junior Zack Line (189) and senior John Logan (215).
‘We looked good throughout the weight classes,? said Couch, noting the seniors have really ‘stepped up.?
Second place medals went to junior Kyle Brammer (130), sophomore Bo Cantara (140), sophomore Mike Myer (145) and junior Keith Bessler (152).
Senior Nathan Musgrove took third in the 125-pound class while senior Aaron Moore placed third in the 285-pound class.
Fourth place medals went to freshman Steve Ferguson (103), junior Chris Sunman (152), sophomore Geoffery Charles (160) and junior Danny Johnston (215).
‘We wrestled really tough and fought hard in every weight class,? Couch said.
Oxford’s victory followed a two-week rest from competition, which seemed to do the team good.
‘It was a much-needed rest,? Couch said. ‘We were going pretty hard before break.?
The Wildcats will once again have the home advantage Wednesday, Jan. 3 as they take on both Berkley and Bloomfield Hills Lahser beginning at 6 p.m.
Still undefeated in dual meets (10-0), Oxford has now won two tournaments ? the other being Romeo’s team tournament held in early December ? and placed third at the Oakland County Tournament.
