Gravel road speed bill passes Senate

Senate Bill 248 ? legislation designed to restore the 25 mph speed limits on gravel roads ? passed the state Senate 22-15 last week and is currently awaiting Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s signature or veto.
Granholm’s press secretary Liz Boyd said the bill arrived on the governor’s desk Monday afternoon and is under review. ‘She has two weeks to decide its fate,? Boyd said.
The bill passed the state House of Representatives on Nov. 30 by a vote of 57-42.
If signed into law, the bill would restore the 25 mph posted speed limits on gravel roads until January 1, 2009 and give locals the ability to petition the road commission for increases.
The bill counteracts Public Act 85 of 2006 which increased the 25 mph speed limit on 283 gravel road segments countywide as of Nov. 9.
As a result of that new state law, 19 gravel road segments posted 25 mph in Addison and 20 such road segments in Oxford increased to 55 mph.
Another two gravel road segments in Oxford increased to 45 mph.
The Road Commission for Oakland County is holding off on taking down all the 25 mph speed limit signs until after Jan. 1, 2007 just in case the governor signs SB 248 into law.
