As of press time, the folks at the National Weather Service station to the west in White Lake Township, say Memorial Day should be, well, nice.
‘A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 71,? is what their website says for Monday’s weather.
It looks like a good day to gather with family and friends and welcome in the summer. But, before all that make sure to come to town for Memorial Day observances.
American Legion Post 233 in downtown has the morning planned out, starting at 9 with the annual services at East Lawn Cemetery. According to Sergeant at Arms Rob King, the annual Laying of the Wreath ceremony has been changed.
‘It will be at the bridge at Meek’s Park this year,? he said. ‘Usually it’s at Children’s Park, but that is under construction.?
The ceremony starts at 10 a.m., and as local tradition holds, a wreath will be tossed into Paint Creek. Meek’s Park is located just outside the Orion Art Center (just over the creek from Children’s Park in downtown.)
The annual parade starts at Blanche Sims Elementary at 11 a.m. Lake Orion Police Chief Jerry Narsh said the traditional route will be followed, down to Flint Street, over to Anderson, to Shadbolt then to Broadway ending at the Emhan Center.
At the intersection of Broadway and Shadbolt, local veteran, Wayne Hunter will be recognized. Mr. Hunter, born in 1930, served in the U.S. Amy during the Korean War of the 1950s.
Before the recognition parade goers will want to look to the sky. Narsh said either two F-16s, or A-10 Warthogs will fly over at approximately 11:15.
‘There will also be a surprise military vehicle in the parade,? Narsh said. ‘It’s quite unique and is actively being used in all theaters of U.S. military action.?
After the parade, folks can make their way to Orion Veterans Memorial on M-24, at Heights. According to North Oakland VFW Post 334 Commander Ernie Baker, all the men and women of the community who served, sacrificed and died preserving liberty and and freedom will be honored. The ceremonies start at 1 p.m.
After Posting of The Colors by the Marine Honor Gaurd, Pledge of Allegiance, Star Spangled Banner (sung by Army Sergeant David Teakell), speeches and patriotic music by the 338th U.S. Army Band, a tribute is planned for the 40 military personnel from Orion who died in combat. Mike Sweeney and Bill Device will give special recognition for Pvt. Roger Fiebelkorn who died in World War II and for Capt. Ernest Fiebelkorn who died in Korea.
Four members of VFW Post 334 will also be presented with plaques of honor — James Hubbard, Randy Stetson, Leo Thomas and Joe Zikewich.
The ceremony will end with a gun salute, taps (played by Tom Allport) and thank yous.
