Job fair postponed, employers still being sought

Due to a lack of business participation, Oxford’s job fair has been postponed until either late summer or early fall.
The fair was originally scheduled for Friday, June 15 at Oxford High School, however, only 10 companies either paid to have a booth at the event or expressed an interest in participating.
Given this, the Oxford Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Oxford Township Economic Development Subcommittee (EDSC) decided to reschedule it in order to solicit more participation from employers both in and outside of Oxford.
‘We don’t have sufficient funds here to advertise just for the (10) companies,? said EDSC Chairman Jack Curtis, referring to the $75 per booth registration fee. ‘We wanted to get (the word) out to some of the surrounding communities.?
Holly Bills, executive director of the Oxford Chamber of Commerce, indicated that in order to have ‘a successful event,? the fair would need at least 23 to 30 businesses participating.
Companies who already paid for space at the job fair include Alcove 9, Genisys Credit Union, Premier Designs Jewelry, Express Employment, Prudential and Relume Technologies.
Those who’ve expressed interest in participating include TK Holdings, Quicken Loans, Trillium Staffing and Kelly Services.
‘It’s been less than a 5?-week campaign (since) I sent the letters out and we’ve got (10) responses, ? Bills said. ‘I think that’s pretty good.?
Curtis has no doubt that an Oxford job fair full of companies from Oakland, Macomb, Lapeer and Genesee counties would be a big hit based on similar events held elsewhere.
‘Gardner White just held one in Auburn Hills to fill that giant warehouse they just built,? he said. ‘The lines I saw on TV were spectacular. That’s just one business.?
