People who say most kids nowadays would rather watch television or play video games than read a book will have to eat their words.
The Oxford Public Library’s Summer Reading Program officially ended Friday with a family picnic and live entertainment at Stony Lake Park.
Library employees and parents celebrated the fact that 429 kids (ages 6-11) who participated in this year’s program read a combined total of 2,885 hours this summer, the equivalent of 120 days. The top 5 kids who read the most hours are pictured right.
Eighty-six teenagers also particpated in the program, of which 60 percent completed their various reading-relating tasks and were eligible for a grand prize drawing. Lily Wissman won the drawing and received a $100 U.S. Savings Bond, donated by Oxford Bank.
