Knights celebrate 50 years in Orion

The Lake Orion Knights of Columbus, Fr. Thomas R. Carey Council #4764, celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a banquet held at the local hall on June 6.
In attendance were the past Grand Knights and Charter Members who have led and sustained the Lake Orion Knights of Columbus Council for many years.
Some of the honored guests included Michigan Knights of Columbus State Deputy John R. Moody and his wife, Judith; District Deputy Peter Riccardo and his wife, Debbie.
Fr. Michael Green, the Council Chaplain for 39 years, and Sr. Marian Harvey, a recently retired IHM Nun were recognized for their many years of service.
Local clergy at the banquet included Fr. Michael Verschaeve from St. Joeseph’s Parish and Fr. John Leo Phalen celebrating 50 years as a priest.
The Knights of Columbus Council was named for an early Catholic priest, Fr. Thomas R. Carey, who established several mission churches that are now Catholic parishes including St. Joseph’s in Lake Orion.
At the banquet, 170 guests observed as Grand Knights Kenneth Simpson presented the Family of the Year Award to Dale and Becky Dessell and Knight of the Year Awards to Ron Hines and Robert Deachin, all who reside in Lake Orion.
The Lake Orion Knights of Columbus has 290 members. The 400 councils in Michigan total more than 71,000 members serving their Catholic churches and communities.
The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal Catholic men’s organization for those 18 or older. It follows the principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism.
