Lady Dragons take on Paint Creek

In a whirlwind end to their season, the Lady Dragons varsity basketball team got a round of applause and a big ‘thank you? from their most enthusiastic opponents yet – Mrs. Pilar Mazur’s second grade class.
Girls from the team visited the Paint Creek class on Wednesday to help celebrate Reading month. The visit not only polished off the basketball season, but was a final farewell to the young students who had been writing letters since the team entered regionals.
‘After (the Dragons) won regionals, the team asked if we could write to them again,? said Mazur. On St. Patrick’s day they not only sent letters, but good luck charms, too.
During their Paint Creek visit, players read aloud to the students, after which the group headed to the gym to shoot hoops. Second graders also presented the team with a signed basketball.
?(The visit) esteems the kids as well as the girls,? said Dragons Head Coach Steve Roberts. ‘It provides both an interest in learning and an interest in basketball.?
Maddie Novak, a student in the class and a huge Lady Dragons fan, and her mom, Michele, initiated the penpal program with the team.
‘Maddie never missed a basketball game, home or away,? said Michele. ‘She dressed up and Courtney Zott for Career Day and wants to be a Lady Dragon when she grows up.?
