One week after a few squads had separated themselves from the pack, the pack began to reel the top teams in.
And, after the first week of inter-league play, Hamlin Pub/Taco Bell and SteelMaster Transfer/Christi’s ? each with 5-1 records overall ?’lead the American and National Leagues, respectively.
Hamlin Pub/Taco Bell won its fifth-straight game, with a 21-11 triumph over VFW Post 334/State Farm, which fell to 0-6 with the loss.
Nick Walls led the victors with a perfect 5-5 showing and a home run at the plate, and was followed by Ted Voight (4-5), Sanjay Shah (3-4, home run) and Ryan Thebert (3-5). Hamlin Pub leads the league with 143 runs scored in six games.
Ron Brunson had four hits in four tries for VWF, as Jerry Hoffman and Steve Guy had three hits apiece.
Anderson Financial (3-3 record) ensured that no team in the summer of 2007 would go undefeated in the ‘World Famous? Lake Orion Men’s Softball League, with a 22-18 victory over previously undefeated Christi’s.
In fact, no team has ever finished a regular season undefeated in the 40-plus year history of the league. In comparison, no team has also finished a full season without at least one win.
Pacing the way for Anderson Financial, on the mound and at the plate, was Eric Peplowski, who hit a grand slam, a three-run home run and finished 4-6 behind the dish. Chris Teague and Scott Doughty had four hits each, and ‘Bubba? added a home run for the winning A.I. squad.
For Christi’s, Darrin Sliwa was 5-5 at the plate, Mike Smith had five hits in six tries with a home run and Dennis Mahan added a long ball.
One of the surprises Thursday night was a 20-2 loss for TLC/Gentry Painting, which fell to Ruby Tuesday/Guinn Construction (3-3 record). It was the second-straight loss for TLC, which now sits one game behind Hamlin Pub/Taco Bell in the American League with a 4-2 record.
Mike Burke allowed only two runs ? one in the 1st inning and one in the 8th ‘for Ruby Tuesday/Guinn Construction, and helped his own cause with a 4-6 showing on offense.
Eric Brittingham was a flawless 5-5, and Captain Derek Stark had four hits in five tries. Jay Traylor added a home run, and Ruby Tuesday leads the league with only 65 runs against.
Four players had two hits each for TLC in the loss.
Cobra Computers/G & G Tree continued its winning ways and improved to 4-2 with its third-straight victory, an 18-14 win vs. Sports Explosion. Captain Erik Davenport continued a great night for pitchers at the plate, as he led his team on the mound and also offensively with four hits in five plate appearances.
Phil Damico had only two hits in three at bats, but both were home runs, for Cobra Computers/G & G Tree. Several players had three hits each.
Sports Explosion fell to 1-5 with the loss, and bright spots for the team offensively were Ron Biggs (4-5, home run) and Mike Chammarro (4-5). Ricky Slater added a home run.
Two of the teams fighting for playoffs spots in the American and National League pulled off upsets in Week No. 6, as BW3’s beat Gilligan’s Pizzeria, 16-12, and Deano Mac’s/RLC had a huge 28-7 victory over the Lake Orion Eagles. Both winning squads improved to 2-4 with their wins.
Brett Slocum, Jimmy Hoffman and Travis Fuchs each went 4-5 at the plate, as Fuchs added a home-run ball for Deano Mac’s. Three players had four hits each.
In the loss, Chas Chamberlain was 4-4 at the plate for the Eagles? squad, and Tony Burns finished his night 3-4.
BW3’s had had several close games all season long, and finally ended up on the winning end, as Roy Robbins, Kyle Fritz and Matt Sliwa each finished with four hits.
