Letter to the Editor: Community center wanted

I was just out at the Seymour Lake Township Park trying to play tennis.
The courts have huge cracks and weeds are growing up through them.
I’ve lived in Oxford for 25 years and I thought someday when I retire I’m going to play tennis.
Well, that day is here, and I’m more than a little disappointed. I called Parks and Rec and they were very pleasant, but said it would cost $250,000 to fix up the tennis courts.
Obviously too much for their meager budget.
They said it would make more sense to tear them out. I hate to say it, but I have to agree.
Then, as we were talking, they mentioned the old idea of a Community Center. I remember that being voted down years ago. So I wanted to know more.
Where was it suppose to be located?
Just east of Glaspie Street was a 25-acre site they already owned and thought would be a good location.
What was it going to be like? It would have two tennis courts, racket ball courts, a gym, an area for senior citizens and a separate area for teens.
It even had banquet halls.
Doesn’t that sound fantastic?
The millage went down by only 300 votes.
Now, since that time Waterstone and a whole lot of other building projects have come to Oxford.
There are a lot of young families and new kids in the neighborhood.
So, it’s partly selfish on my part, but I think it’s time we revisit the community center idea.
It could only improve the Oxford area and make it an even more wonderful place to live.
What they say about Lake Orion, they could say about us too, ‘Where Living Is A Vacation.?
