Letter to the editor: Missing street corner mailboxes

Dear editor,
We are writing to ask your support and the support of your readers. We ask that our local post office to reinstall the free standing mailboxes that have been removed from our neighborhood.
Our Lake Orion Post Office removed several free standing blue mailboxes from throughout our township last year. For example, there used to be a mailbox at the Orion Library and outside the Kroger’s at Baldwin and Waldon.
We and many citizens used these mailboxes to post our monthly bills, which the post office told us we should not put for post in our home mailboxes due to mail fraud.
Now, when we post our monthly bills, we must travel to the Lake Orion Post Office. This is very difficult for many citizens, including the elderly. In fact, there are no free standing mailboxes that we know of in the township.
Although we understand the need for cost savings, the surrounding townships have not removed the mailboxes to the extent that Lake Orion has. Service should still matter to the post office. We have contacted the management at the post office, but we have received no response.
Could you and your readers contact the post office if you share our concern? Their phone number is 248-693-3253.
Thank you,
Greg and JoAnne Flynn
