Hugh Murphy is enthused about having his art displayed at the Independence Township Library meeting room.
“I can’t believe it. I am so excited about this,” Murphy said. “This is my first real show. I have never done one of these before.”
Murphy has lived in Clarkston with his wife, Shawnie, for 32 years. The couple, who grew up down the street from each other in Detroit, have two children Wayne and Jennifer.
Murphy draws for a creative outlet. A new interest for the artist is illustrating people’s homes, new and old. He has also drawn churches, barns, old cars and lighthouses among other items over the years.
“I enjoy taking a blank piece of paper and putting pen or pencil to it to see where the journey takes me,” Murphy said. “I am not limited to any one subject.”
The former automotive industry technical illustrator spends about 10 hours a week working on his art. He is currently a designer for an automotive interior supplier.
Murphy said he has been an interested in art for as long as he can remember.
“I guess I have always been an artist. My mother would give me a box of crayons and some paper and I would draw until the paper was gone or dinner was ready. With eight brothers and sisters one could not afford to be late for dinner,” Murphy said.
Murphy even showcased his artistic ability while in the army.
“The Mess Hall Sergeant found out that I was an artist and asked me to paint murals on the walls. Not a bad job plus I got to eat as much as I wanted,” Murphy said.
Jean Cavalier, a Clarkston artist, chooses a new local artist to be showcased at the library each month.
