Addison Township’s observance of Memorial Day will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 27 in Lakeville Cemetery on Drahner Road between Walker and Betts roads.
Organized by the Lakeville Cemetery Auxiliary, the ceremony will consist of prayers, readings, bagpipe music, a wreath-laying at the flag poles and a 21-gun salute to the honored dead.
Area veterans of all wars and branches of service, both retired and active duty, are invited to attend, pay their respects and be honored for their service.
A potluck luncheon will immediately follow the ceremony. Meat will be provided.
Oxford’s Memorial Day observance will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29 in Centennial Park with guest speaker Oxford Township Supervisor Bill Dunn.
A veteran of the United States Air Force from 1966-70, former Sgt. Dunn served in the Vietnam War in 1967 and 1968.
Also in the park ? patriotic music performed by the Oxford High School Marching Band, wreath-layings at the various war memorials and a roll call ceremony which involves reading the names of all the Oxford servicemen who died in battles since the Civil War.
White crosses bearing the names of Oxford’s honored dead will fill the center of the park.
The annual Memorial Day parade will begin immediately following the ceremony in Centennial Park. All veterans are welcome to march.
The parade will march from the park north on S. Washington Street, turn left at Burdick Street and head west to the Oxford Township cemetery on the north side of the road. Once assembled at the cemetery, there will be prayers, a reading of ‘In Flanders Field,? the playing of ‘Taps,? and a 21-gun salute.
After the ceremonies and parade, veterans and their families are invited back to American Legion Post 108 at 130 E. Drahner Road for a free luncheon.
