The Lake Orion Men’s Softball League held its annual Pig Roast tournament on July 28, as five teams played in a double-elimination format.
Nearly 80 players showed up to play, and five coaches, Brian McCall, Dean Klovski, Derek Stark, Travis Fuchs and Erik Davenport, chose their teams, with a ‘backyard baseball? style draft, similar to how the actual league teams are chosen every summer.
In the end, Stark’s 15 players out-dueled Davenport’s squad, 10-4 in the championship, to finish the day 3-0.
Leading the way for the Pig Roast champions was John Vackaro, who finished 4-7 at the plate and added a walk, triple and a run scored. He was also the winning pitcher in all three games.
Also having all-tournament performances were Dave Bullock (5-7; home run, sacrifice, triple, five runs); Nick Voight (6-9, two doubles, triple, run); Brian Davenport (5-5, two walks, two runs); Dusty Miller (4-6, sacrifice, double, three runs) and Eric Brittingham (5-8, home run, four runs).
More than 200 people attended the event, which was chocked-full of family-oriented activities, such as a water balloon toss and dunk tank.
The Pig Roast is funded every summer by part of each player’s fee, and participants must be a Lake Orion resident when they sign-up to play that season or, at anytime, as an LOHS grad.
The league thanks Jack Hutchinson and Bobby Lawton, who have helped the tournament and festivities become what it is today, and Cheryl Adragna for organizing the children’s activities.
