Man accused of raping Oxford woman faces charges

An Oxford woman will finally get to face the man accused of kidnapping, raping and attempting to kill her nearly three years ago.
A preliminary examination for Mohammad Haris Hasan, 23, has been scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1 in the Waterford 51st District Court before Judge Richard Kuhn.
Hasan was arraigned Sept. 7 on several felony charges stemming from his alleged Jan. 20, 2002 attack of a then-24-year-old Oxford woman and her then 27-year-old Lake Orion boyfriend. He’s currently being held in the Oakland County Jail. The arraigning judge revoked bond for him.
The accused was returned to Michigan Sept. 6 after spending more than two years in a Pakistani prison fighting extradition to the U.S., according to Oakland County Assistant Prosecutor Mark Bilkovic.
Hasan fled to Pakistan in January 2002 ? just days before he was formally charged ? and was arrested there shortly after arriving. Bilkovic said the accused attempted to revoke his U.S. citizenship to avoid facing charges, but was unsuccessful.
Hasan faces one count of kidnapping; one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm; one count of assault with intent to commit murder; and eight counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. All charges are felonies and Hasan faces life in prison, if convicted.
According to police and prosecutors, Hasan ? along with Ali Tleis and Erik Muehlenbein, both of Dearborn ? allegedly offered the Oxford woman and her boyfriend a ride home from Pontiac on the night of Jan. 20, 2002.
The couple had been drinking at Pontiac’s Clutch Cargo nightclub and could not find a cab, so they accepted Hasan and his friends alleged offer of a ride.
But instead of driving the couple home, Hasan and his associates allegedly assaulted the woman’s boyfriend in Waterford Township, threw him out of the car and ran him over. He suffered broken bones.
The three men then drove the woman to Hasan’s River Rouge home and allegedly repeatedly raped her.
They then drove her to Detroit’s Belle Isle, allegedly smashed her head against a tree and left her for dead. Fortunately, after they left her, the woman was able to call 9-1-1 on her cell phone.
Before formal charges were issued against him, Hasan fled to Pakistan with his father, who returned a week later and allegedly told authorities his daughter had went with him, not his son, according to Bilkovic. As a result, Hasan’s father could face federal charges.
Tleis and Muehlenbein were convicted of several felony charges stemming from the incident. Muehlenbein is serving a 23-year/9-month-to-60-year prison sentence after a jury convicted him of two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of kidnapping. Tleis is serving an 8-to-60 year prison sentence after pleading no contest to four counts of frist-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of kidnapping.
Bilkovic said authorities have a ‘good, solid case? against Hasan with both ‘eyewitnesses? and ‘physical evidence linking him to the crimes.?
The prosecutor said the Oxford woman has recovered from her injuries and is ‘ready to go.?
‘She’s been waiting for this day,? said Bilkovic, noting this is the ‘last chapter? before she can ‘get on with her life.?
