Mt. Zion Theatre Company gears up for the comedy production “The Last Gladiator,” April 4-5 and 11-12.
The play, written by Martin Fallose, is set in ancient Rome. The Emperor is off to war, leaving the princess to rule. The princess must marry but the evil senator, who wants the throne for himself, concocts a plan to get her out of the picture: she must marry the last standing gladiator.
Diana Stafford, director of the company, said the production is a great thing for the community. She is thrilled to offer quality entertainment at a reasonable price.
‘I love the fact that it’s just funny. It’s nice to offer something to people to make them laugh in hard times,? Stafford said.
The play is their second at their new, state-of-the-art theatre. As things progress, the company will offer 6-8 plays per year to the community, she said.
In May, they will begin casting for the September production, “Death by Chocolate.” Stafford tries to pick plays other churches aren’t doing to offer more variety.
‘Our mission is to serve the community and part of that is to provide entertainment,? she said.
Richard Mason of Independence Township will appear as Gladius, one of the main characters. He decided to get involved after he saw the first play in November.
‘My wife and I saw the last play and it looked like a lot of fun,? Mason said.
The theatre is located at 4900 Maybee Road in Independence Township. Tickets are $10 if purchased in advance, $12 at the door.
