Groveland Twp.- Each spring for more than 30 years Clyde Herb has helped open Groveland Oaks county park. Yet after all those years the 2005 season may prove to be the best ever.
Since closing for the season last fall Herb, park chief, along with a legion of workers and contractors have added some unique attractions to the 360 acre park including a 18-hole adventure golf course (mini-golf), a skate board facility, new hiking trails and resurfacing almost a mile of biking trails.
The projects say, Herb just add to the family-activity theme emphasized throughout the summer months.
‘We fill up on the weekends with a couple thou-sand campers,? said Herb. ‘This year more than ever we’ve got a lot more to do out here for everyone.?
With more than 500 modern campsites at the park there’s still plenty of room, says Herb.
‘We have a different park activity just about every week,? he said. ‘There’s lots to do for the family.?
Although still in the park master plan, Jan Pung, communications officer with Oakland County Parks and Recreation says future plans for expansion of the park purchased in 1969, include the addition of a golf course just to the north of the Groveland Oaks Park south of Tripp Road.
‘At one point a golf course was located just south of Tripp Road and east of Dixie,? said Pung.
‘A golf course is on the current master plan’but that’s just an outline of what the property could be used for in the future.?
Currently the county operates five golf courses and 11 parks.
