New marquee not a necessity

Nothing is written in stone yet, so there is still time to get to the Goodrich Board of Education. If you’re going to sell out our children’s mouths, you should at least use the ill-gotten gains to recoup cut after-school programming.
In the November 29, 2004 edition of The Citizen we reported, in two separate stories, more cuts in program were en route. We quoted board president Michael Thorp as saying, ‘If you think your club, your sport has been cut, they probably have. Everybody else is going to be cut, too.?
In fact, clubs like Goodrich High School Students Against Drunk Drivers, Spanish Club, Ski Club; arts, literature and small business clubs in the lower grades have been ‘eliminated.?
On Nov. 29, we also reported the school board is considering renewing its contract with Coca-Cola. From the last contract the school district gained about $20,000, which was used to build a new scoreboard. Schools are considering using funds from the new exclusive Coke product vending contract for a high school marquee.
We urge the board to put money from this contract back into after school programming — programming which enrich our kids? lives. The high school already has a marquee ? don’t waste new money on a new public relations sign.
