New signs by Goodrich schools

Atlas Twp. – The last of three flashing school zone signs was recently installed on Gale and Hegel roads near Goodrich schools.
Previously posted school signs were difficult to read and confusing, said Goodrich Schools Superintendent Raymond Green, as drivers were often uncertain as to when school was in session, especially around holidays or during summer months.
Installed by the Genesee County Road Commission, the flashing signs cost the school district approximately $9,000, said Green. ‘With the bond issue, we decided to get signs that say ?25 when flashing.?
Atlas Township officials were helpful in encouraging the road commission to ‘get this on the agenda,? said Green, ‘because everybody knows this curve isn’t a real safe place.?
The signs, which caution motorists to observe the 25 mph school zone speed limit, will flash simultaneously during four time periods on school days according to the operation schedule agreed upon with the school, says Darren Gohn, Genesee County Road Commission traffic signal department supervisor.
The flashing lights will operate from 7 to 7:30 a.m., 8:15 to 8:45 a.m., 2:30 to 3 p.m., and 3:30 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday when school is in session.
When the lights aren’t flashing, the speed limit remains 35 mph, said Detective Sgt. Joe Parks, of the Genesee County Sheriff Atlas precinct.
The signs are posted near Goodrich High School, Oaktree Elementary, and Goodrich Middle School.
