No to OAYA

Lake Orion Village Council members on March 28 rejected a request by Orion Area Youth Assistance for a contribution of $1,000 for 2005-06.
LO Village Manager JoAnn Van Tassel had recommended turning down the request. She told council members the village’s contractual expenses are increasing at a higher rate than are revenues.
She believes that because village residents are also paying Orion Township taxes, this contribution amounts to double dipping for village residents.
Both the township and the school district contribute to OAYA. The school district provides office space for OAYA.
Council members turned down a similar request last year.
The village was an original sponsor of youth assistance when it was formed in 1961.
According to Derek Mazur, OAYA Board Chairman, OAYA is planning to expand its programming to further work to prevent the incidence of delinquency and abuse in the community.
