Nominations sought for annual Community Awards

Do you know someone who gives their all year after year to the Clarkston community?
Is there a youngster out there who does everything ? school, extracurricular, homework, church, volunteers ? yet still finds time to do that something more for someone else?
Or is there a group in the area that simply made Clarkston a better place to live?
Then now is the time to tell those individuals and groups how much you appreciate their time, commitment and work.
The Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce is currently accepting nominations for the Michigan Week Community Awards 2006. This annual event is scheduled for May 17 from 7-9 p.m. in the Clarkston Junior High School Auditorium.
The event honors the top individuals in the Clarkston area ? Independence Township, City of Clarkston and Springfield Township ? in eight categories:
? Citizen of the Year: an individual who gives his/her time, energy and talents to improve our community. Qualifying activities do not have to be exclusively volunteer in nature.
? Young Person of the Year: Young person, 18 and under, who give his/her time, energy and talents to improve our community. Qualifying activities do not have to be exclusively volunteer in nature.
? Adult-Youth Volunteer: Individual who gives their time, energy and talents, in a volunteer capacity, to help area young people. This award seeks to recognize individuals who provide ongoing volunteer efforts for youth in our community. Only volunteer activities qualify.
? Business Person of the Year: Local business person who contributes to the community making this a better community in which to live and do business. Qualifying activities do not have to be exclusively volunteer in nature.
? Community Preservation: Individual, group or business that made a significant contribution towards the preservation of our historical community. Qualifying activities do not have to be volunteer in nature.
? Community Beautification: Individual, group or business that made a significant improvement to the appearance of the Clarkston community.
? Community Enhancement: This award recognizes a group, club or service organization’s yearlong efforts to enhance the quality of the community in the Clarkston Area.
? Community Collaboration (Team Effort): This award recognizes a collaborative effort by two or more individuals, groups, clubs or organizations to improve and enhance the Clarkston community. Efforts do not have to be exclusively volunteer in nature. ‘Organizations? is defined broadly, including businesses, government agencies and schools.
There are a few guidelines for nominating in these categories:
? Previous recipients in an award category may not be nominated for the same effort for which they were previously recognized.
? Anonymous nominations are not considered.
? Multiple nominations for a person or group do not affect the selection committee’s decision. A single nomination is considered just as carefully as 50 duplicate nominations.
? Nominators are not asked to make public presentations.
All nominees are invited to attend the awards. Those selected for recognition are notified prior to the event. The presentations are not surprises.
Also, courtesy of the event’s corporate sponsor Oxford Bank, all award recipients receive two free tickets for the evening.
