Nothing but net: Senior Blackhawk tops 1,000 points

Brandon High School Senior Dustin DeShais became only the second player in Blackhawk history to score 1,000 points in a career, earlier this month.
‘The varsity coach called me up to play when I was a sophomore’I didn’t expect to play much. Then by the third game I started,? said DeShais, 17. ‘It was a lot tougher competition’but I still knocked down 326 points my first year on varsity.?
‘As a junior I was much more confident’I scored 366 points that year, but I was double-teamed a lot. Now, as a senior, every time I touch the ball I hear the other coach yell, ‘Shooter!? and the defense is all over me.?
Despite the ramped up defense, with two games left in the season DeShais has 350 points, still shy of the school career record held by Brandon Junior Varsity Coach Justin Zoldos of 1,148 points.
‘I hope to play college basketball somewhere,? said DeShais, who at 6 feet and 200 pounds has been scouted by Albion College, Rochester College, and Trinity International University (Illinois).
According to the Michigan High School Athletic Association, the state record for most points in a high school career is Jay Smith of Mio, who scored 2,841 points from 1976-79. Mark Brown of Hastings scored 2,789 from 1982-85.
