Thursday, June 3 was a record setting night for the Oakview Middle School’s track and field team.
The Oakview Dragons became the first Lake Orion middle school to win the Oakland County seventh and eighth grade championship, and the first school in the 25-year history of the event to win the boys and girls team titles outright in the same year.
Forty-five middle schools from all corners of Oakland County participated in the meet, which was held at Clarkston High School. The Oakview track and field team is coached by Carl Zoolkoski, Julie Maurer and Ian Witherspoon.
Oakview boys took first place with 65 points. Avondale (59.5), Van Hoosen (53), Warner (46) and Waldon (38) also placed.
Oakview’s Lady Dragons took their title with 82 points. Van Hoosen (56), Boulan Park (49), Holy Family (36) and Derby (34) also placed.
In addition to winning the team titles Oakview athletes earned eight county titles in individual events and relays.
The county champions are:

Hannah Cady ? girls? 100m dash in 12.72 seconds.
Maddie Stringfellow ? girls? high jump at 4?11?.
Maddie Steele, Lauren Schultz, Michaela Tucker and Hannah Cady ? girls? 4x200m relay, at a time of 1:53.5.
David Diaz, Michael Losensky, Griffin Beeler and Corey Ester ? boys? 4x200m relay, with a time of 1:40.8.
Corey Ester ? boys? 100m dash in 11.87 seconds
Zach Arnold ? boys? 200m dash in 23.76 seconds.
Zach Arnold ? boys? 400m run in 52.6 seconds
David Diaz ? boys? 1600m run in 4:39.45.

Zach Arnold and David Diaz also set new Oakland County middle school records in the 400m dash and the 1600m run respectively. Diaz’s time shattered the old record of 4:49.1, which stood for 14 years.
Austin Arnold of Waldon Middle School was also a county champion in the 70m dash with a time of 8.62 seconds.
Brad Schaenzer finished second in the high jump 5? 8.5’and shot put 43? 2?, leading the Waldon boys? team to a strong fifth-place finish.
The only other team to come close to Oakview’s accomplishment was Van Hoosen Middle School of Rochester in 1996, when they tied for first with Washington Middle School of Pontiac in the boys? meet, while also winning the girls? title outright.
