Kayakers plied the blue waters of Deer Lake, hunting for medals in Michigan Senior Olympics.
“This is a great event,” said Aaron Whatley, Independence Township Parks and Recreation. “It’s a scenic course, paddling close to shore. Everyone enjoys it.”
Thirteen competitors 50 and up raced in 1,500-meter and 5-kilometer courses around the lake, said Anita Twardesky, public relations and marketing for Riverside Kayak Connection, which provided sports commissioners for kayak and canoe events.
“Men and women, novices to experienced,” Twardesky said. “You don’t need to bring your own equipment ? you can try it out using our boats.”
The kayak event is in its third year with Michigan Senior Olympics, its first at Deer Lake.
