The Oxford High School Combined choir competed at the Music in the Parks competition at Cedar Point on May 16 and was awarded a Superior Rating with a composite score of 92.
The choir received the highest score in their Mixed Choir Class AA Division and brought home a first place trophy, and also had the highest score of all high school choirs in the various divisions at the competition, bringing home a trophy for overall highest score for high school choirs.
The 51-member choir performed two songs under the direction of Christopher Card.
Two adjudicators of national acclaim judged each performance group at the competition and awarded ratings based on tone quality, intonation, rhythmic and melodic accuracy, articulation and musicality .
At the awards ceremony held at Cedar Point, approximately 1,000 students waited in anticipation for the results of their performance.
When Oxford was announced for first place the group immediately leapt to their feet in excitement and celebration.
The Oxford High School vocalists took first place in this music competition just one week after the Oxford Middle School Concert Choir and Honors Choir took first place at a music competition.
‘At a time of the year when many students have tired of working hard, our Oxford High School vocalists have stepped up to the challenge of competing against choirs from around the Midwest and gave one of the finest performances of the year when it mattered the most,? said Card. ‘I could not be more proud of our dedicated and talented vocalists ? they are wonderful to work with.?
