OHS senior athletes honored

Seventy-three Oxford High School senior athletes were honored Sunday by the Oxford Wildcat Booster Club at the group’s annual Senior Athletes Dinner held at the Boulder Pointe Conference Center.
‘Your high school career is coming to an end, but many new and exciting challenges await you,? said Booster President Chuck Gall. ‘Some of you may continue to play sports in college, or on recreational leagues. Others may use their talents to become coaches. Whatever road you choose to take, we know you will always treasure your high school sports memories and will continue to follow in the Oxford tradition.?
The 46 male and 27 female athletes honored earned a total of 296 varsity letters during their four-year high school sports careers. In order to be honored by the Booster Club, a high school athlete must receive a varsity letter in at least one sport during their senior year.
‘Vice Lombardi ? the famous Green Bay football legend ? once said, ‘The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand,?? Gall said. ‘Every one of you has displayed this trait ? that success does take hard work and determination, which is evident from your many accomplishments.
Prior to the presentation of the senior awards, three special awards were presented by OHS Athletic Director Pat Ball.
Elizabeth Banachowski, who lettered in cross country for four years, was honored with the ‘Scholastic Athlete Award,? which Ball said is presented to the student ‘who received a varsity letter in their senior year and had the highest overall grade point average.?
The ‘Helen Smith Award,? which is presented to the best female athlete as voted on by her peers, was given to Caryn Inman.
Inman was the only athlete in the Class of 2003 to earn 12 varsity letters in three sports over her four-year career. She earned four letters in basketball, four in volleyball and four in track.
Patrick Flannery won the ‘George Prince Award,? which is presented to the best male athlete as voted on by his peers. He lettered four times in football and once in wrestling.

‘All of you have displayed and worn the Oxford Blue and Gold with pride, shown outstanding sportsmanship and fulfilled many goals,? said Booster President Chuck Gall.
