Freshman Delaney Kenny stood at the line as the scoreboard remained frozen at six seconds remaining in overtime.
Kenny threw the basketball and sunk the one point the Lady Wolves needed to take their first win, 46-45.
‘Our defense pretty much won the game and our offense came from our defense,? said sophomore Megan Hastings. ‘We played really intense. It was a lot better than our past two games.?
The team had scrimmaged the Lady Cougars at the beginning of the season and knew what to expect – especially from their lead shooter Gabby Yurik, who posted 56 points in Stoney Creek’s first two games.
Clarkston’s defense was ready, playing every minute intense as they closed the first three quarters a few points ahead of the Lady Cougars. The key came from defense as the girls quickly reacted to what was happening on the court.
Stoney Creek caught up to Clarkston in the final eight minutes and ended the quarter tied at 42 putting the league game into overtime.
Junior Lindsey Reppuhn sank a 3-pointer to put Clarkston into the lead. Moments later Cougar Liz Moss tied the score.
The Lady Wolves held onto their possession of the ball for the last minute. Kenny ran through defense and went to make her shot as the last ten seconds counted down – and was fouled on.
‘It was a big toughness win for us,? said Tim Wasilk, Girls Varsity Basketball head coach. ‘We hit some big shots and did a nice job on the defensive end. Overall it was a great team effort on the defensive end. Anna Manilla did an awesome job on the defensive end shutting down Yurik.?
He noted Hastings and Kenny had a good night.
‘Delaney had a big free throw, it says a lot for anybody especially a freshman,? Wasilk added. ‘Megan hit some big shots tonight.?
Hastings led the team, scoring 16 points during the game with two 3-pointers. Reppuhn added 11 points and three field goals and Kenny scored eight points and one field goal.
Lady Wolves kept Stoney Creek’s leading scorers Moss to 12 points and Yurik to 11.
‘I was really proud of the effort,? said Wasilk. ‘We are making steps in the right direction.?
JV won their game against the Cougars, 47-37.
The Lady Wolves face two more league foes before their start their winter break.
They played West Bloomfield on Tuesday, then host Troy on Friday.
‘We have film on them and will see what we can do,? said Wasilk.
JV begins at 5:30, varsity follows.
‘We have to just keep getting better,? said Hastings. ‘We have to play just as intense.?
