Optimists host Eton program

Clarkston Area Optimist Club hosts a presentation by Pete Pullen, Eton Academy’s head of school, 7:30 a.m., Jan. 26.’Pullen will present ‘Five Ways to Help Your Child Overcome ADHD and Dyslexia.?
‘I strongly believe in community outreach,? says Pullen. ‘We are a resource for parents, teachers and interested community members who may benefit from better understanding how to identify and support a different learner. Regardless of which school is the best fit for the child and their family, we have access to research and educational tools that we are happy to share.?
Clarkston residents James and Doris Ward have a sixth-grade son at Eton.
‘Alex has had learning challenges his entire life, so I am always researching options’and keeping my ears open for anything that may help him,? says Doris. ‘Since starting at Eton, he has advanced over a grade and a half in his reading level just since September.?
‘There are friends all around you here,? adds Alex. ‘There are only seven kids in my class. It’s quiet. I get help in my work and have reminders to make good choices. In sports, everyone gets to play.?
Alex’s teacher Lauren Trueman uses many visual cues and reminders with her students.
‘We have a lot of multi-sensory tools that we use to help keep our students engaged in learning,? Trueman said.
Clarkston Optimists meet every Wednesday morning in the Fellowship Hall at the Clarkston United Methodist Church, 6600 Waldon Road. The public is invited.
