Oxford soccer working to overcome a lack in numbers

Oxford soccer returned to the field this past Friday after a week away to face off against Fenton. The Lady Cats lost their first game back 3-0.
‘We’re just not generating offense right now,? said coach Val Cerato.
Fenton took hold of the field by scoring two goals in the first half. With only 12 players available, Oxford had a difficult time keeping the energy fresh.
Cerato said that once again the senior team was lacking numbers and brought up four JV players – Chelsea McIntosh, Melissa Browning, Kira Griffin and Shana Jones – to help.
On Monday, the Lady Cats fared a bit better losing by a narrower 2-1 to Brandon. Lady Cat Deann Kujawa scored Oxford’s only goal during the second half with eight minutes left on the clock. This is the first year Kujawa has played offense.
‘She kept her composer and she worked it in,? said Cerato. ‘She sent a nice shot right pass the goalie.?
The game started off slow for the Lady Cats, who were playing into the wind and only took one shot compared to Brandon’s nine. However, things began to improve in the second half when Oxford matched things up with nine shots to the Martians 10.
Cerato said her highlight player for the evening was sweeper Holly Marshall.
‘She is fast,? said the varsity coach, ‘she made some solid, solid tackles.?
Other top players included first time varsity members Andrea Ricketts, Katie Miner and Kehly Hicks.
‘They are all very strong and have been running their legs off,? said Cerato.
The Lady Cats are sitting 0-4 as new team captains Angela Hendley and Christine Fortier help prepare the team to play against Richmond tonight (Wednesday) at home. This will be the first time Oxford has played the Blue Devils.
